Tired of Cen-ProjekT?
Probably not, but Chris has decided to name his latest release (February 14, 2025) simply “Engels”.
We're in the presence of 10 compositions which, while hardly more optimistic than Cen-ProjekT's last (“Dawnbreak” 14.10.2024), stir up the same themes with an assertive, confident lyricism. For our stakhanovist of Progressive Rock from across the Rhine, going small is hardly an option.
This is how our artist evokes morose reveries (Fleeting Moments), offers us beautiful cosmological allegories (Finding Light), reflects on ancient times, plays on the duality of darkness and light (Lost in Dreams), reminds us of the passing of time and the good times to be enjoyed (Life is a Gift), sings of the anguish of a lost love (Whisper In The Air, I'm Still Dreaming), castigates social inequality and the morbid race for profit (A Shadonw Class Of Emperor, Blood and Gold) and, finally, tells us this primary truth; the earth, life, will survive after we're gone (The Earth Will Whisper When We're Gone). It's all beautifully crafted, with plenty of pace and imagery to engage our own imaginations.
Chris's pleasant, well-stamped voice brings the lyrics to life with conviction.
But don't be fooled into thinking this is a black album. The musical offering, varied without being composite, highlights - once again - Chris's skills as a poly-instrumentalist, composer and arranger. The pieces are harmonized with care, benefiting from well thought-out/placed arrangements, and the result is a fine series of melodic songs, sometimes lively, always sunny rather than sombre. Yet another of Chris ENGELS' trademark contrasts.
The man with 17 albums has struck again!
